Why have a website?

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Many companies throughout the world today are operating their business with no website. When the internet keeps moving forward and advancing, your business needs to advance as well. If companies do not own or operate an online business as well as a physical business, they will lose out on sales and additional profits.

There are so many valid reasons why owning and operating a website is important. Reaching your target market in your own area is one thing, but having a website allows you to reach your target market world wide. Many more individuals and companies are becoming computer and internet savvy, this means to stay atop of the competition, you need to have a website that is not only informative but functional and professional. If marketed properly you should have sales or contacts via your website that are valid and valuable.

Every business needs to have an advertising campaign, and including your current website in that is vital to success on the internet. It’s not good enough to just have a website; you need to invest time and money into your online business. Between pay per click advertising and the search engine marketing, it is more important than ever to keep the online public aware of the services and goods you provide. Whether you decide to hire out these tasks to a web design or marketing company or do the job yourself, it is the most important factor to getting your website awareness out there to the public.

If you own a business and it is not online, this is really a huge factor that needs to be considered. Not only will owning a website help your current clients, with items such as your office hours, prices or services available, it will allow your online audience to see what great products and services you offer, and possibly inspire them into action!

How to Build a Website

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Building a new website can be both exciting and daunting. The opportunity to communicate to such a large audience is exciting whilst the work involved in getting a site ready for launch can indeed be daunting. However, with a structured and logical approach, it can be made quite painless – and in fact quite enjoyable!

Website Purpose

Before even thinking about design and structure, the first decision to be made is with regard the purpose of the site. Write something akin to a mission statement, for instance: “our site will enable people to buy great quality sporting goods at a superb price”. It is critical that you write down on paper just what you want your site to achieve and communicate. This informs and lends purpose and structure to the rest of your site and should be kept in mind throughout the design process.

Target Audience

You will also need to clearly hold in mind your target audience – who you are writing the site for – this will inform both design, tone of voice and, most importantly of all, site content.

Page Titles

Next, you should define the number of pages you will need and the key theme or title of each page. Jot these down on a piece of paper.

Taxonomy

You are now ready to define the structure, or taxonomy of your site. Group the page titles you listed above into a logical structure that – critically – will make sense to the customer and not just to you. Give this a lot of thought as it can make or break your site. How easy or hard it is for the customer to find what they want can be the difference between a successful and a disappointing website.

Remember to consider how many levels of navigation you are prepared to have, and bear in mind that for each extra click down the site traffic will often fall off by around 50%. This means you should aim for a flat but logical structure, with no more than three clicks from the homepage to reach deepest content if at all possible.

Page template

The next step will be to define your page template. This will ensure that the hierarchy established by the taxonomy is followed. The best place to put navigation is down the left hand side so that it is easiest to access and find. Since most sites put navigation down this side of the page, it is also the best place to put it – the eye almost expects navigation in that area of the page when viewing a site.

Remember to have space at the top of your page for a logo and, if relevant, search. Some sites also put a list of links in a horizontal navigation bar underneath the logo at the top of the page.

Content

The final step is the writing of the content for your site. Remember to bear in mind the site purpose, audience, page titles and taxonomy when writing the content – or pass these details onto a copy writer if you decide to use their services.

Ensure that you write clearly and succinctly – and break up text with lots of white space, lists and perhaps a few images if they add value.

Ensure your ‘calls to action’ are clearly labelled and that all language you use is non-technical and free of jargon that is used inside your company.

If you follow this advice, you’ll be well on the way to creating a website that works well for you, your company and – most importantly of all – your visitors.

Creatine for Rookies

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Creatine is a favorite supplement among bodybuilders to enhance their physiques. Many people question whether creatine is safe to use and wonder if it is as dangerous as steroids. You are going to learn the basics of creatine use, what it does for your body, and some of the false interpretations of creatine. After reading this you should then possess the knowledge to determine whether or not you should use creatine.

Creatine is naturally made in the body and comes in many of the foods you eat, which is why they cannot ban it. Foods such as salmon, tuna, and beef contain trace amounts of creatine, but your best sources are from Creatine Ethyl Ester or Creatine Monohydrate because they carry more creatine per weight of product than any other available source.

Creatine can increase lean muscle mass after only a weeks use. It also speeds up your recovery rate, increases energy, improves endurance levels, and even accelerates fat loss. Creatine also increases muscles` growth, making your muscle muscle fibers bigger and stronger. This happens because creatine super hydrates muscle cells with water.

To many people confuse creatine with anabolic steroids, which is not the case. The media is mostly to blame for this because they do not have proper knowledge on the matter and use it as an excuse to why they are out of shape. “Creatine causes heart problems,” “Creatine makes your testicles shrink,” I`ve even heard a guy say that he hates people who use creatine, but why? It is completely safe.

Creatine is relatively a cheap supplement and one you shouldn`t be spending an arm and leg on anyways. My personal experience with creatine made me gain a solid three pounds after two weeks use but I lost that weight after I quit supplementing with it. Other people easily gain more weight than that but I try keeping fat gain to the absolute minimum. So if you want to experiment with creatine, don`t be afraid to give it a try. Just be smart and know what you`re doing beforehand. Until next time, later.

How To Choose A Web Designer

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

A little while back I had a bit of a discussion about a certain profession that I will not mention here in case someone from the industry in question takes it the wrong way. Don’t get me wrong, every major profession is there for a reason and adds a tremendous amount of value to society. The fact of the matter is that every industry and profession has good aspects and bad. When you think of a doctor, lawyer, architect, accountant, etc, you tend to have a personal frame of reference, as well as a more widely held stereotype. There are usually some aspects of that profession that irritate you, or that you think could do with some improvement. Perhaps you don’t make use of certain professional services because of these perceptions, whether or not they are commonly held or based on fact.

That got me thinking about my own industry, and what it is about the internet consulting and web design and development industry that drives people nuts, and that if things were different, people would utilize these services more often. What would people change about the industry if they had a magic wand? What would you do differently if you were, for example, a web developer, to differentiate yourself?

These are some of the things I have been told hold people back when discussing this topic with some small businesses:

- Web design and development is too expensive for the average small business

- Apprehension over how qualified an internet professional really is

- There is too much jargon in the industry, which makes it confusing to assess as a non-technical business person

- There is a shortage of internet programming skills relative to visual design skills in the industry

Personally, my big wish is that a certain level of qualification (a degree combining computer science, design and business) was a requirement to practice, the same way that older professions are required to, like accountants, doctors, lawyers, etc. The low barrier to entry makes it difficult for businesses to distinguish experts from hobbyists. Imagine having to choose your doctor based on what he tells you he knows how to do for you!

So, how then does one assess a potential internet partner, who can and should be a long-time partner in the online success of your business? Here are some things to look at carefully when choosing a web designer, web developer, internet business consultant, or related service provider, from my experience:

Technical and business qualifications and experience. Is the business comprised of an inexperienced person with a web design hobby, or has the business got people with tertiary level business, programming and design skills in-house? Make sure they have real-world business experience in developing e-commerce solutions, and look into how far back that goes.

What online business applications has the business developed previously, and how does this match your requirements? Some web design businesses will give you a very nice looking static brochure site, while others will be able to offer advanced functionality, such as a database and content management capabilities, e-commerce functionality, internet business consulting services, site promotion, site management, hosting, domain registration, design, application development, site optimization, newsletter systems, form processing capabilities, logging of user activity, online surveys and polls, user registration and authentication, advertising management, content syndication, and the like. Check how many of these are optional extras an how many are included in the price you are quoted up front. You should always get a detailed proposal up front, and compare apples for apples rather than being too subjective initially. My business, for example, differentiates by bundling over 250 enterprise-level applications into our small business package, at a lower price than most web designers will charge just for the design and some basic functionality.

Long term cost/benefit. What is it going to cost you the next time you need to make a modification? I’ve never yet come across a successful website that was designed and left as it was created on day one. Your site needs to change with your business, so make sure you know how you will be billed for those changes, and what the time frame for them will be. Every site also has hosting, bandwidth and maintenance costs that most people don’t think of when first creating a site. Look into what these will be, and what you get for them, so that you can budget for them when starting your project. Also keep in mind that a cheap solution with one or two features will probably not serve you as well as a slightly more expensive one with extensive built-in capabilities.

Personal style and preference. Different businesses will bring different styles and methodologies to the party. Make sure that the one you go with suits your personal preferences. If your internet specialist loves graphic-intensive Flash-based sites, they will probably develop your informative content-based solution, just not as well as someone who specializes in your preferred style.

Online promotion. Make sure that the business you choose is good at promoting their own online presence. Google, Yahoo, and MSN are the three most popular search engines, so make use of them when choosing a provider. If you are looking for a web developer in your local area, search for the terms you find most important and include the name of your area. For example, I optimize my services for the Joondalup area of Perth, Western Australia, so a search for “web design Joondalup” or “web development Joondalup”, or many other internet-based services, brings me to the top when people are searching for local service providers. An internet business that is no good at promoting itself online will be worse at helping you get yours up to full potential.

Satisfaction guarantees. No website can make a flawed business model work, but an online expert should be able to help you make it everything it can be over time, much the same way a personal trainer can’t make you fit overnight, but they can help you become a top athlete with focused ongoing attention. Find out what guarantees, if any, are provided. This is a real differentiator, because, understandably, many web design businesses won’t do this. Those that do are at least serious and confident in their abilities to ensure that their clients are happy and successful.

Management of expectations. Any internet business that claims excessive short term success rates is probably overselling themselves. Make sure that they (and you) are realistic about the time frames in which your online presence will start producing results.

Consulting skills. Make sure that you are dealing with an internet consultancy, not just a web design house. Experienced internet consultants have the business experience to help you make your business successful online in ways a web designer will probably not.

Find successful web sites online. Many will have the site developer’s details in the footer, or in a credits section of the site.

The evolution of machines

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Marathon originated from Greece. Its origin dated back hundred of years ago when a person has to run a hundreds of miles in order for a message to be sent. These messengers took off by foot, over mountains, across rivers in order to deliver messages from their leader to leaders or heads of another city. The messengers had to travel back, on foot, after the message had been given. Think of the sacrifice this people have to go through just to keep others informed.

Information has long been an important factor in any lives of the people. Dating back way back when, people have always been interacting with other people. It has never become a problem since people are likely to find ways of communicating with another. It may be by signs, speech and printed materials.

One of the most important ideas ever been thought by people is communication through writing. It can be noted that the early Egyptians have done their writing and drawings on the walls of caves. They use this to be able to take note of things and share with others. Then came the paper and pencil, followed by typewriters, computers and finally printers. Since the evolution of these machines, the demand gets higher and higher.

The internet made another breakthrough as people now can have access to anything or any person just by going online. Printing services are revolutionized, as people can easily gain access to sites these services for whatever job they need done. This could have been a difficult task if not for the state-of-the-art equipments that are being used by these companies.

People always wanted to have the best of everything. By hiring the services of this trained people, they only get the best service that they deserve. Doing the ultimate is what they do best. The seemingly impossible are done without the slightest hint of difficulty. This is what they stand for and they maintain that image.

Just as the people are committed to achieving excellent results for whatever endeavor they decide to take, these services are also keeping up with what is expected of them. Giving the best of service to their clients by giving it all that they have got.

It cannot be denied that people are always trying to outrun or keep with technology. In the future people will be happy to note that every task will not be difficult anymore with the help of machines that takes up almost everything a human can do.

Human Rights Watch

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Originally established in 1978 as the Helsinki Watch to help monitor the Soviet Union’s compliance with the Helsinki Accords, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) is considered the largest human rights advocate group in the United States. Its more than 240 dedicated volunteers come from different backgrounds and from various parts of the world. The group pursues projects and programs dedicated to protecting the rights of people all over the world. They conduct research and investigations on cases of human rights abuse worldwide.

This non-governmental organization receives funding from private individuals, groups, and organizations. HRW carries out its functions by holding dialogues with government representatives and agencies and urging them to take definite steps in putting an end to abusive and discriminating practices. Some of the other advocacies of the group include protecting people against various inhumane conduct during wars; communicating with and encouraging the public to take action against human rights violations; and taking concrete actions that will help make abusers and other human rights violators accountable for their acts.

To fully reach out and inform various publics from around the world, HRW publishes their findings in books and reports on a regular basis.

Recently, HRW made vocal their protests against the U.S. government’s inhumane treatment of child soldiers who are imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay and Iraq. They condemned the government’s brutal tactics of interrogation without access to lawyers and the detaining of some children for more than one year even without charges.

Human Rights Watch members encourage civilians to take part in their programs and activities that are also aimed at controversial issues like gay rights, women trafficking, abolition of capital punishment, and various other crimes against humanity.

Valentines Day – Flirting With Your Spouse?

Monday, January 19th, 2009

So what’s the big deal about St. Valentine’s Day? Well it is the day of love, romance and flirting. What about married couples? I mean, married couples can still sizzle and dazzle each other even if they have been married, five, ten or twenty years, right? So lets start flirting.

Men, you first, have some fun and impress your wife with your love!

1. Set the ambiance and mood of the bedroom by turning off all the lights except one red light bulb in a corner lamp. Sit down on the bed and just stare into your wife’s eyes. You won’t be able to do this without laughing because your wife will want to know why you are behaving so strange. When she asks, tell her that you are flirting with her because you love her and miss giving her attention like you used to. She’ll love that.

2. Give her your smiling and laughing attention for the rest of the evening. Ask her how her day went. Get interested in your wife and what she has to say. Nothing makes a woman feel good about her self more than when her man is genuinely interested in her. Lock your gaze with her when you are listening to her talk. When she is done talking, kiss her lightly on the lips.

3. Prepare ahead of time something homemade and tasty to eat, like a chocolate fondue or a chocolate mousse pie. You can do this, if you put your mind to it. Homemade treats are so much more enjoyable and romantic then store bought. But if you really can’t cook, at least buy something chocolaty, that is if your wife likes chocolate.

4. Hug and touch your wife whenever you think of it. Don’t wait until you want sex, hug her and give her a back rub. Bring out the homemade pie and cut your wife a piece. Gaze at her lovingly as she gobbles down your delicious pie. Make her impressed with your cooking.

5. Hide an expensive box of chocolates under your wife’s pillow. After sex, talk some more, and don’t just roll over and go to sleep. Give her your full attention. Love the woman you married.

Ladies, you’re next. Do you ever flirt with your husband? Valentines Day is not just for lovers but for married lovers too. I don’t care how long you have been married; it is absolutely imperative that you keep your marriage upbeat, romantic, and hot!

1. If you normally don’t wear your hair up, then put it up in a sexy bun and put on some red lipstick and greet him at the door in something skimpy. Give him a long sensual kiss right before you sit down to eat his favorite home cooked meal. He might ask you what all this is for. Tell him that you miss flirting with him. He’ll like that.

2. Have your own Valentines chocolate hunt. Hide individual wrapped chocolates for your husband in your lingerie drawer. Give your husband little hints and clues about where the candy is without actually telling him. Have the candy hidden in a pair of new skimpy, lacy, sheer panties.

3. Put on a brand new slinky nightgown and sit down on the bed acting as if you only want to talk. Let one of the straps drape down on your arm. Make sure you are wearing his favorite perfume and your hair is tidy and combed. Start reading your favorite book. Glance up at him every once in while and give him a big smile. Continue playing hard to get for a while and watch what happens.

4. Buy some new red silk sheets, and have the bed drawn back and ready for love. Have only one candle lit. Hide a box of expensive chocolates under your husband’s pillow.

Enjoy loving the man you married!

Supreme Early Snowfalls across the Northern Alps

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Global warming and the financial crisis, these twin threats have spared the Southern Alps, at any rate for the time being. However it could have been so altogether different. In the weeks before Christmas towns in the La Clusaz area were isolated when snow storms came down. Dual carriage way routes such as the all important Col du Megeve were closed. In that location there was no mains or telephones, locals had to be evacuated to temporary accommodation, it seemed as though it were a repeat of 1999.

It looks that all news is good news. Gourette featured every evening on national French news bulletins. As soon as mains was fixed inquiries commenced to arrive, drawn in by the fantastic conditions.

Val-d Isere and nearby Brevent lay claim to nearly 3.5 m snow depth on the upper slopes at 2500 metres alt. and 2.2 m at the base of the runs. Currently the best in the French Alps. Serre Chevalier reports there is five metres at the top of the resort. Regrettably snow drifts have demolished a support of the chair lift which goes up to the area. It will be out of action until mid Mar.

In other resorts in the S. Alps reservations have increased 16% in La Clusaz, Les Deux Alpes and Alpe d Huez. Savoie has 99.7% tenancy and distributed a record number of passes last Wednesday. That is timely for luxury ski chalets and large ski businesses.

One Single Thing Can Change Your Life

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! I’m excited it’s time to get back to work. I find New Year’s day a wonderful time. Many of us are looking back at the past year and thinking about the goals and how we can change our life. Take an assessment of your life, your health, your business, and your relationships.

One single thing can change your life forever. Wouldn’t you be proud if your accomplished it in 2006.

Things to think about in Changing Your Life:

1. Change your diet: How much sugar are you consuming? Our society is addicted to the sweet stuff and it’s adding alot of additional calories. To be honest with you since I stopped drinking soda I have not been battling weight gain. Another idea is going out to lunch. It costs you extra time and money. Besides Taco Bell, KFC, or any fast food is laden with fat, chemicals, and junk to be honest.

2. Change your life and start exercising: I’ll be the first one to say I don’t like exercise classes, or I don’t have the time, or I don’t want to pay for the expensive health club. But what is your excuse to not go walking. It’s the perfect exercise. It’s cheap, easy, you can do it almost anywhere.

3. Change your relationships: In a nutshell, whatever you pay attention to grows, and whatever you ignore dies. Keep priority in the ones you love, if they left tomorrow how would you feel.

4. Change Your Life and Start Thinking About Your Personal Growth: Alot of us stop growing after we leave school. We stop reading books, and stop spending our time wisely. Too much T.V. gets us nothing but parnoia of the world. The T.V. sends us messages on what they think is important. Each year I spend thousand’s of dollars on seminars, books, tapes, and classes. I don’t look at the world in the same way I did 6 months ago only because since than I’ve probably read about 12 books.

5. Change Your Life by living like tommorrow was your last day: Stop taking things for granted. Start telling important people in your life that you love them. Be grateful for everything you have, there are so many others who do not have much.

6. Change Your Life by establishing a relationship with God: Become a member of a church, find out what your purpose on this earth is all about. Get involved.

So you ask “Christine what are your goals for 2006?” I hope to live each day as an opportunity to achieve my goals and dreams. My #1 goal is to replace my current business. This will allow me to be completely financially indpendent. I have a dream of working from my computer overlooking the beach at Koa Lagoon Maui Hawaii. I just loved that place.

Great Books to read, start 2006 out to a sizzling start!
