Human Rights Watch

Originally established in 1978 as the Helsinki Watch to help monitor the Soviet Union’s compliance with the Helsinki Accords, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) is considered the largest human rights advocate group in the United States. Its more than 240 dedicated volunteers come from different backgrounds and from various parts of the world. The group pursues projects and programs dedicated to protecting the rights of people all over the world. They conduct research and investigations on cases of human rights abuse worldwide.

This non-governmental organization receives funding from private individuals, groups, and organizations. HRW carries out its functions by holding dialogues with government representatives and agencies and urging them to take definite steps in putting an end to abusive and discriminating practices. Some of the other advocacies of the group include protecting people against various inhumane conduct during wars; communicating with and encouraging the public to take action against human rights violations; and taking concrete actions that will help make abusers and other human rights violators accountable for their acts.

To fully reach out and inform various publics from around the world, HRW publishes their findings in books and reports on a regular basis.

Recently, HRW made vocal their protests against the U.S. government’s inhumane treatment of child soldiers who are imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay and Iraq. They condemned the government’s brutal tactics of interrogation without access to lawyers and the detaining of some children for more than one year even without charges.

Human Rights Watch members encourage civilians to take part in their programs and activities that are also aimed at controversial issues like gay rights, women trafficking, abolition of capital punishment, and various other crimes against humanity.
