I’m Ready to Lift Weights – How Do I Get Started?

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

You’ve read over and over that strength traininglifting
weightsis a fountain of youth and helps keep your body
strong as you age. And you’ve decided you’d like to buy
some dumbbells and set up an exercise program in your
home.

The first thing to do is to make an appointment with your
health care provider. Since strength training is good for
almost any physical problem, you will probably be given the
green light. But if your doctor gives you any warninglisten
and do what he or she says. There are some physical
conditions that preclude strength training.

Now that you have approval, how many weights do you
need? Where can you purchase them? How much will they
cost? What else will you need?

You’ve probably heard that you can use soup cans or gallon
jugs filled with water, and it’s true that you can. However, I
believe that you’re better off purchasing dumbbells–cans
are hard to hold onto, and jugs of water slosh around so you
don’t get the same response as you do with a dumbbell.
The one exception to this is if you are very weak and cannot
lift a 3-pound weight. In that case, you may want to use
cans of food or bottles of water rather than purchase one or
two pound weights which you’ll soon abandon as you
become stronger.

You’ll need at least three different sizes of weights for
working different muscles. For instance, you’ll need a lighter
weight for working the triceps muscle (the one below your
upper arm that we call “bat wings”) than you will for other
exercises.

Weights (dumbbells) are available at discount stores and at
sporting goods stores where you’ll have several kinds from
which to choose. The least expensive are the plain gray
metal weights with hexagonal ends which work just as well
as more expensive ones. The gray weights cost
approximately fifty cents per pounda pair of five pound
weights weighing a total of ten pounds will cost about five
dollars. The ones with round ends tend to roll when you put
them on a chair seat, which can result in injured toes,. If you
place one weight diagonally across the other one when you
put them down; this lessens the possibility of the dumbbells
rolling off the chair seat.

To begin with, you’ll need light weights, although you’ll soon
leave those behind and move to heavier ones as your
muscles get stronger. If you are a female over forty, I
recommend that you begin with: one pair each of 3, 5 and 8
pounds. A man should purchase one pair each of: 5, 8 and
10 pound weights. Men who pursue an aggressive
program, will soon need 12 and 15 pound weights.

You will need a chair without arms (a folding chair works
just fine) and a space large enough that you can lie on the
floor with arms and legs spread out for floor exercises and
stretching. If you really “get into” weight lifting, you may want
to invest in a pair of ankle weights, but you won’t need them
to begin your program. You can always add them later for
lower body exercises,

If you have arthritis in your hands, you may find that a pair of
weight lifting gloves will help make lifting the weights more
comfortable. Other equipment you’ll need includes a chair,
a towel, a bottle of water and a good pair of shoes. Please
don’t ever lift weights without shoes onit isn’t worth taking
a chance on injuring your toes.

Finally find a place to store them where they’ll be out of the
way. and easily accessibleso you won’t be tempted to put
off exercising because they are difficult to get at.
Please don’t forget to drink water while you’re exercising.
Keep a bottle of water handy while you’re working out and
drink frequently.

I suggest that you find a workout partneryou’ll be able to
motivate each other on the days you just don’t feel like
exercising, but I promise that if you go ahead, you’ll be
energized afterward. Many people tell me that they have
more energy after they have finished a workout than they did
when they came to class.

You should also create a schedule of times and days for
your workout. Write down your schedule so you won’t forget.
You should not do resistance training on successive days
with the same parts of your body. For instance, you wouldn’t
want to do upper body exercises on consecutive days. If you
want to lift weights every day, alternate upper body and lower
body. For instance, do upper body and Monday, Wednesday
and Friday, and lower body on Tuesday, Thursday and
Saturday.

You’ll get the best results by doing resistance training at
least twice a week–not more than three times.
Now, you’re all set to begin your program. My book “Over 40

The Lowdown on American Express Blue

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

If you are ever on the lookout for the closest fit to a perfect credit card, the American Express Blue Card may be the card that you are looking for. With $0 annual fees, a 0% introductory APR for 15 months and a fixed rate for balance transfers at 3.99% which will last until the loan is paid up.

Apart from these low figures, the American Express Blue card also comes with a very attractive rewards program that lets you score points for every dollar you charge to the card. Regardless whether it is a shopping spree, a normal gas tank fill-up or a candlelight dinner for two, you can just charge your expenses to your Blue card and earn rewards without having to keep count.

In addition, with the American Express Blue card Express Pay feature, you no longer need to wait forever for the cashier to swipe your card, print the slip and sign on them. The Express Pay feature allows you to make payment just by holding the card up to a reader. Hassle-free and at a low cost, what more could you want in a credit card?

Well, American Express aims to please and this is why their cardholders are also well shielded through the various protection plans that American Express offers to their American Express Blue card owners. Also, their fraud protection plan guards you from any unauthorized transactions whilst using the card, while the return protection plan lets you return any purchased items within 90 days, failing which American Express will refund you the price of the item.

Subjected to eligibility, your items are also protected against damage or even theft within 90 days of your purchase. However, there is always a catch especially when it comes to a card this perfect. Despite the 20-day grace period for payments, this card charges a daily percentage rate instead of the usual annual percentage rate charged to the outstanding balance at the end of each month. Therefore, users of the American Express Blue card really need to be careful about late payments as every single day counts.

How Popular Is Video Poker?

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Video poker is one of the most rapidly expanding segments of the poker business. It was wildly considered to be an extremely dynamic market that will only expand further in the future. One of the reasons behind this optimism is that most poker professionals consider online poker a form of video poker. As the options of online gambling continue to expand, so do the opportunities to play video poker.

Even if you don’t consider online poker as a form of video poker, there has still been huge rises in its popularity of late. You need to remember that video poker has only been around for a comparatively short time, after all, it is computer based. Just like the computer, it has really taken off and come into its own as technology has advanced. Nowadays, most Las Vegas casinos devote at least half of their electronic console gaming space to video poker. It is even slowly edging out traditional slot machines as the most popular variety of game at brick and mortar casinos.

Some casinos are even skipping out on the other types of games entirely. It is not unheard of for a small gambling establishment to have only video poker machines, after all, that is what most people want to play. If the current poker craze continues, you can be sure of seeing a lot more video poker games in the future.

Ready Or Not…Change is Coming

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

The one thing that we can absolutely be certain of in this life is that things will change. Well I guess there are two things; things will change, and we will die. Okay, maybe three things, there will be change, we will all die someday and we will pay taxes…

As we get ready to celebrate the arrival of another new year, we in our family are reflecting on the fact that things will change. We as people will change. Think about this for a second, who you are married to or who your significant other is today, is not who they were when you met or married them. People change!

As we embrace the challenges of this new year, my prayer is that we look at ourselves and do some deep soul searching and ask ourselves, “what do I need to change?” “What about my life do I need to work on?”

You might need to work on an anger issue or you might have a problem with an addiction that you really need to seek help. The thing is, we all have our issues that we must confront. To this day, there has still only been one perfect person, who was without sin…

I challenge all of us, myself included, that we should consciously change something in our lives that will make our own worlds a better place, starting with the man or woman in the mirror.

A Surefire Way To Feel Amazing Now

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

First of all a word of warning. The simple techniques contained in this article will powerfully effect your life. Don’t continue reading unless you want to feel amazing.

Okay? Ready to get back control of your life?

Great! Let’s get started…

Ever found yourself unable to shake off a bad mood? Got angry and felt unable to break out of it? I know how you felt. I used to do exactly the same. I used to feel that I was a slave to my emotions, that if I was “in” a bad mood then that was just the way it was. I’d go to bed at night and hope that the next day I would wake up and “be” in a good mood.

It used to feel like an emotional lottery and like a lottery not something that I did well on. I always thought there was a better way. I mean, I knew how to change the way I felt, I could drink alcohol or eat food. That would do the trick and that’s the way a lot of people do it. Although that would work, I didn’t like the downside. I didn’t want the hang-over or the extra pounds.

I knew there must be a better way and I set out to find it. And find it I did! In this article I will give you a simple and fun way to change the way you feel. After reading this, you can take a bad feeling and turn it into a good one. Sounds good, right? Well, read on…

How do you feel at the moment?
Curious? Intrigued?

As you think about this, notice where you can feel the feeling in your body. Allow yourself to tune into the feeling and locate it exactly in your body. Got it? Great! Just allow yourself to experience it and where it is.

Try another feeling…

Think back to a time when you felt really happy and excited. Just allow an image of that memory to drift back into your mind, now. See what you saw, hear what you heard and feel the feelings once again.

Now, as you think about that feeling, notice whereabouts in your body you feel it. Is it in your stomach, your face, your neck or floating around from one part to another? Once you locate the feeling, notice how it is moving. Richard Bandler, the co-creator of Neuro Linguist Programming (NLP) says that in order to continue to notice a feeling, it must keep moving. Just track the movement of the feeling flowing through your body. It may remain in place, it may spin around or it may do both. Just notice the direction it moves and/or spins.

Now, if the feeling had a colour, what would it be? Whatever answer comes to you first, go with that one. You may think that you just guessed but that does not matter. Remember that the unconscious mind is responsible for intuition and guesses and it’s the unconscious mind we are communicating with now.

Okay, so with this happy feeling inside, we now know where it is, how it is moving and what colour it is. Try listening to the feeling and either hear or allow yourself to imagine what sound it would make. This could be a simple noise, e.g. a gentle hum, or it could be a voice saying a certain phrase or word. Whatever it is, that is right for you and the feeling right now.

Okay, so that was fun but what use was it? Well, by determining those attributes (i.e. location, colour, sound) we now have some “handles” we can use to modify it. So, with the happy feeling still flowing inside your body, move and spin it faster. Then spin it faster still and notice how that changes the feeling. Double the speed and spin again. Make it race around your body and feel how that changes the feeling. Now, make the colour brighter, more vivid and powerful. How much does that increase the potency of the feeling? Again, make the colour really saturated and intense. Try making the sound louder and crisper, keeping it spinning fast and the colours bright and notice how that increases the feeling even more. Got it? Great!

Okay, so we have taken a good feeling and intensified it. Will that be a useful skill to have? Absolutely! Why settle for feeling good when you can spin up a good feeling and make it great.

What about bad feelings? Well we can play with them as well. In fact why not turn bad feelings into good ones and then spin them up into great feelings? Sound compelling? Then let’s do it…

Just let your mind drift back to a time when you experienced a bad time, let’s start with something minor, like a bad day at work or something similar. Allow yourself to recreate the memory. See what you saw, hear what you heard and feel the annoyance or anger in your body. Now, notice where the feeling is. In order to keep being felt it must be moving or spinning. Notice how it moves or which direction it spins. As you pay attention to the feeling, notice what colour it is. Finally, listen to the feeling and determine what sound it makes. If you don’t hear a sound, don’t worry, just imagine what sound it could have, that would be fine. Okay, so we have our bad feeling and we know how we create it, in terms of attributes, lets mess with it a little bit…

Right, pull the feeling out of your body and hold it in front of you. Twist it around, flip it over and re-insert it back inside again. Do this in one mental movement or two if you’d prefer. Notice how the feeling changes when it is replaced upside down and back to front. Now start to move or spin it in the opposite way to before. Most likely the colour would have changed or be changing by now but if not then just start to influence the colour and allow it to begin to change. With the other attributes changing, the sound will have changed too. If not then again just pay attention to it and notice how it fades or changes in some way. With the feeling spinning the opposite way the feeling flips over too and becomes another feeling altogether. Flip a bad feeling and get a good one. Now, once this new feeling is moving and has its new colour and sound, start to intensify it. Spin it faster and faster, make the colour brighter and more vivid and make the sound louder and clearer and crisper. Then, double the intensity again. Do whatever you need to do and double it yet again. That’s right. Not a bad change, huh? Now, feel free to do this whenever you have a bad feeling and enjoy it!

This was just one way to change the way you are feeling. If you want to find out more, check out http://www.feelamazingnow.com for details.

Bruce Almighty (DVD) Review

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Personally, Bruce Almighty is my favorite Jim Carrey movie ever. It’s never outlandish in its approach, and at times, it’s quite serious and adult. In fact, for a comedy, it presents some surprisingly deep philosophical questions concerning the actions of a just God and our place in the universe. Inevitably, it sparks internal and external debate among viewers in regard to what we would personally do if we held the power of God in the palm of our hand…

In Bruce Almighty, Carrey plays the role of Bruce Nolan, a local television reporter always assigned to cover less than thrilling events in and around his hometown. Dreaming of the network anchor chair, he works tirelessly to rid himself of the “funny guy” image. He lives with girlfriend Grace Connelly (Jennifer Aniston), but the two get into a major argument when Bruce, who loses his bid for anchorman to the underhanded Evan Baxter (Steve Carell), flies off the handle and loses his job. Discontent with his failure, and constantly blaming God, Bruce directs his anger at those around him. But in the interim, he receives numerous calls from an unknown phone number. When he finally calls the number, he’s offered an interview for “the job of his life”. Curious, Bruce attends the interview in a bleach-white building where he’s confronted by a mysterious janitor who claims to be God (Morgan Freeman).

God confronts Bruce with all the complaints he’s made, and then makes a surprising offer. God will let Bruce take his job for two weeks. God will go on vacation, and Bruce will be granted all the powers of the Almighty…

The result is an hour and a half of utter hilarity. Bruce begins by parting his tomato soup and proclaiming himself “Bruce Almighty”. He then uncovers the biggest story of the year when he “happens upon” the recovery of Jimmy Hoffa’s body. Inserting himself in the backdrop of an endless string of amazing news stories, Bruce gets his old job back and watches his personal stock soar. Sabotaging Evan’s career, Bruce is given the anchor chair he so covets.

But along the way, his relationship with Grace falls apart, the world around him edges closer to anarchy, and the powers of God become too much for Bruce to handle. Unable to cope with the looming disaster of his actions, Bruce encounters God once again, but this time his life perspective is far different than before…

Some of the scenes in this film are beyond description, they’re so funny. In one such scene, Bruce (now having the power of God) faces down a gang which had previously beat him senseless. What he does to their leader will make every viewer cringe. More than just a comedy, Bruce Almighty forces the audience to imagine themselves in a similar situation. A wonderful and intriguing idea for a story, Jim Carrey brings the film to life and entertains audiences with a comedic omnipotence of which God himself can be proud…

7 Keys to Turning Cold Calls Into Warm Calls

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Let’s face it when it comes to cold calling many of us fear being rejected. What if I was to tell you I have come up with 7 keys to turning your cold calls into warm calls? Would you believe me?

Try these 7 cold calling ideas for yourself and see just how easy making a cold call can really be.

1. Change Your Mental Objective Before You Make Your Call

When making a cold call the traditional way, your main objective is usually to try and get the appointment or make the sale. The main problem with that is when you do make the call it is quite clear to the person on the other end of the phone that this is your goal and they usually think of an excuse to get you off the phone before they have a chance to hear what you have to say.

To turn your cold calls into warm calls you need to change your objective to creating a feeling of trust with the person you are calling. It is important to remember that the person you are calling needs to feel that you are calling to help them rather than just trying to make the sale.

2. Understand The Mindset of The Person Your Calling

This is an extremely important tip and one that can help you greatly with your cold calling success. By putting yourself in the mindset of the person you are about to call, you can move beyond making a sales pitch.

Imagine that you are that person receiving the call and you hear “Hello, my name is Clare and I’m with a company called Financial Solutions International, do you have a few minutes?” What would be your immediate reaction?

You’d probably think “Salesperson! How can I get them off the phone.” Instead, try beginning your conversation with “Hi, my name is Clare, maybe you can help me out for a moment?” Something as simple as that puts you smack in the middle of your prospect’s world of welcoming phone calls.

3. Identify A Problem That Your Company Can Solve

Knowing a specific problem that your prospect is having is how you can immediately create a natural conversation on the phone.

If your prospect feels that you really do understand their particular issues, then they are more open to hearing your solutions giving you the opportunity to see if you both are a good match.

Identifying the problem before you make your cold call really can make a major difference in the success of your cold call.

4. Start A Conversation, Don’t Give A Presentation

Giving a presentation is the old traditional way of cold calling which has the negative affect of creating sales pressure and viewing people as “prospects”.

Engaging people in a natural conversation is the only way to avoid rejection because you are relaxed as if you are talking to a friend. A genuine approach will always put your potential customer at ease from the start.

Never assume beforehand that your prospective customer should buy what you have to offer. Your prospect will pick up on this right away and you will be on your way to losing the sale.

5. Start By Asking A Question

After your opening cold calling statement, always begin by asking a question about how you can help them solve issues that you believe your solution can solve.

Think about it, how would you respond if someone genuinely knew what you were struggling with and had ideas to solve it?

By basing your cold call on honesty and truthfulness and knowing how to engage your prospect based on their issues, then all of a sudden your call becomes a two-way dialogue rather than a one-way pitch.

You will be able to open up a conversation and be able to build up trust at the same time.

6. Recognising and Diffusing Hidden Pressures

By being able to recognise hidden sales pressure you can turn your calls into pleasant conversations. And be aware, that enthusiasm can make your prospects feel pressure from you.

Learning to engage in a natural conversation can alleviate this pressure and leave your client open to the idea of hearing what you have to say.

Try to avoid controlling your calls in a way where your prospect feels you are taking them down a sales process. Give them a chance to share their concerns with you without having to worry about you trying to “close” them.

7. Determining A Fit

Let’s say your call is going great and the dialogue is flowing well but the conversation is reaching its natural end. What do you do next?

Most people who sell assume they should try and close the person to an appointment. But there is a risk in that if the person’s problem isn’t a priority to solve. So it’s important that you first ask “Is this issue a priority to solve or is it something that’s on the back burner?”

Not only have you determined a need but you will also determine a time frame. This could save you months of wasted “follow-up” calls.

Now it’s time to start putting these tips into practice. From personal experience, I can tell you that you if use these ideas on your cold calls, you’ll know how to turn cold calls into warm calls.

A Guide To Fish Oil Supplements

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Fish oil supplements are an important dietary supplement, because they provide essential omega-3 fatty acids, which the majority of people in the Western world are deficient in.

Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for the maintenance and function of the brain. They may help prevent heart disease and may ensure a normal heart rate and coronary blood flow. A daily fish oil supplement may also have a beneficial effect on blood pressure and can lower blood triglyceride levels. High levels of triglyceride and cholesterol in the blood stream may lead to the development of atherosclerosis, heart disease and stroke.

Studies by the National Institutes of Health concluded that daily fish oil supplements can reduce joint tenderness in arthritis patients.

The body uses omega-3 fatty acids to produce eicosanoids. Eicosanoids regulate cell division and growth. They regulate muscle activity and blood clotting. They allow the cells to absorb calcium and other needed substances. A daily fish oil supplement, which provides omega-3s, is important to many bodily functions. Years ago, cod liver oil was taken in liquid form as a dietary supplement. Cod liver oil tastes and smells awfu;, today’s fish oil supplements are generally in capsule form and are odorless and tasteless.

Fish oil supplements are particularly important to the average American diet, because most Americans do not eat enough fish. Even when a person eats fish three to five times per week, many doctors still recommend a fish oil supplement. The body does not produce omega-3 fatty acids and so they must be obtained from a food source. Leafy green vegetables and flaxseed oil, other sources of omega-3s, do not compose a large portion of the American diet either, so a fish oil supplement is the best option.

It is still advisable to try to eat more fish and leafy greens, but busy people do not always eat what they should. Fish oil supplements provide a small safety net, especially since eating fish can introduce mercury, PCB’s, and other toxins into the system because most fish is tainted due to pollution. A high quality fish oil should be molecularly distilled to remove contaminants, leaving you with the benefits of fish without the drawbacks.

A fish oil supplement may also relieve constipation without using a laxative, which can have unwanted side effects. The only known side effect associated with fish oil supplements is diarrhea, which can be relieved by reducing the dosage. However, since fish oil is a blood thinner, you should consult with your doctor if you are already taking any blood thinners like aspirin, etc.

Consumers should look for pharmaceutical grade fish oil or another indication that the fish oil is purified when purchasing a fish oil supplement. We absorb enough impurities through our skin, the food we eat and the air we breathe. We do not need them in our fish oil supplements.

Find out the fish oil supplements we take ourselves after doing extensive research on products. A pharmaceutical grade, molecularly distilled fish oil naturally high in DHA and EPA can be found at: http://www.omega-3-fish-oil-guide.com
