Preparation

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

In previous articles I discussed Purpose and Potential (you can visit my website to see these articles). Your purpose defines your basic motivation in life and your potential is the capabilities that you have and can further develop in support of achieving your aspirations. I have also spoken about Presence, which relates to the state of being in which you are fully aware and knowledgeable about your self, others, and the world around you and that allows you to be fully aware of your purpose and potential. Knowing who you are, your place in the world, what motivates you, and your capabilities, however, are not sufficient to ensure that you are on the path to achieving your aspirations. You need to have a plan that builds upon this knowledge and that helps you define and clarify the vision that you have for your life. Preparation is the work that you do to ensure that you have a vision as well as the plan for achieving that vision.

The first step in Preparation is to clarify your short-term and long-term goals. What do you want to achieve? When? Why? How do these goals serve your purpose? In answering these questions, you will be better able to understand where you are going and why. Without this knowledge, you are more likely to go through your day-to-day life without satisfying your purpose or fulfilling your potential. Envision yourself leaving your home and walking the streets without a particular destination in mind. While it might be interesting or fun to begin with, at some point you will begin to ask yourself where you are, why are there and where are you going. Anxiety is likely to set in when you are unable to answer these questions. It is in our nature, as human beings, to have a destination or goals. Even at the most fundamental level of existence, we have goals that are driven by our need for security, shelter and food. At a more complex level, we will have goals that are driven by our need to satisfy our purpose. Through the intentional setting of goals that serve our purpose, we are in a better position to fulfill that purpose and to lead more satisfying lives.

It is also important to ensure that you have goals that are both short-term and long-term. If all of your goals will take many months or years to achieve, it will be too easy to get frustrated and discouraged. You need to have goals that will allow you to gain a sense of accomplishment on a fairly frequent basis. As well, goals need to be clearly defined, measurable, realistic, and have a timeframe attached. You need to know that what you are striving for can be achieved, when it will be achieved, and how you will know that you have achieved it.

The second step in Preparation is to understand what needs to be done in order to achieve your goals. You need a plan that defines the steps required for you to follow in the pursuit of your aspirations. Our lives are very complex. If you think about the last time that you tried to put something together, such as a child’s bicycle or a new computer, without following the instructions, you will have a sense for how important it is to have a plan. Knowing your potential is particularly important in this step as it provides the context in which you will build your plan especially if your goals require you to improve on or develop new capabilities. As well, you need to understand what might keep you from achieving your goals. Presence is very important here as it will be your ability to be present that allows you to know what needs to be done, to discover possible roadblocks or challenges, and the path that you will need to follow in order to overcome these challenges.

The final step in Preparation is to write it all down! A written plan is much more real than one that you keep in your head. As well, you can put your written plan in places that will remind you of where you are going and what you need to be doing to get there. If your plan is out in the open and accessible to you, you are more likely to follow it and keep it up to date. Start with your vision and the ultimate goal that is defined by your purpose. From there, define the sub-goals that will move you towards this vision. If you need to, further sub-divide you sub-goals into sub-sub-goals and so on. Finally, write down the specific actions that you need to take in order to achieve your lowest level of sub-goals. Each level of your plan should be more specific and more actionable (i.e. something that you need to do that has very clear and measurable results).

On a final note, it is very important to be focussed in the pursuit of your aspirations. While a well-defined and visible plan will help you keep this focus, you also need to have a manageable number of goals. Too many goals will only serve to confuse and discourage you. As Neil Young sings in the single, “The Painter” from his new album Prairie Wind (2005), “If you follow every dream you might get lost”. Staying focussed will help you to always know where you are, where you are going and what your next step is … and keeps you from getting lost.

Exchange Rate Confusion

Friday, April 17th, 2009

An appreciable number of new traders are disconcert when it boils down to exchange rate insider jargon, even so the insider jargon really is reasonably simplistic. So whether you are a sole trader or a big company looking to change foreign currency; below are some straightforward and painless definitions which might well with any luck extinguish a little of the obfuscation & make the process of earning significant extra income with trading foreign currency significantly less trouble.

Beginning with the most straightforward of explanations an exchange rate is the specific price at one country’s currency will be swapped to another’s. And so, for an example the rate would be the quantity of Thai Bhatt you are entitled to acquire for each and every Hong Kong Dollar. Here is a site you can begin your research if you’re looking to buy foreign currency.

Fixed exchange rates are likewise recognised by the title ‘pegged exchange rates’; they are put to good use to stabilize the current value of a nations currency; especially when that particular currency is fluctuating in value a great deal; this really helps to facilitate business & investment.

Floating exchange rates – this is when a currencies value is calculated via natural market powers. This is a much more hazardous way to conduct business but don’t forget this is the scenario where you might often have the chance to turn a tidy profit,

You will probably additionally overhear talk of animals in currency; a bull is a person that believes market values will go upwards and a bear is a person who believes market prices will drop. A bull market is a marketplace where values are currently moving upwards conversely a bear market is the exact opposite – a marketplace where values are actually going downwards

A currency broker is an individual that acts as an intermediary person in-between yourself and the market place – brokers are actually oftentimes in a position to get you the very best price when you are looking to buy or maybe sell.

The dollar rate is the exchage rate that a single unit of any currency has when pitted against one measure of the American Dollar; this is a very useful indicator for a currencies current value.

This is obviously by no means an exhaustive list – merely a starting point; but with a tiny fraction more investigating you can be considerably on your way to becoming a financial expert in no time at all.

Exchange Rate Terminology Made Easy

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

A lot of corporations become jumbled-up when the topic of conversation gets to the heart of exchange rate jargon, however the industry terminology remarkably is quite plain. So regardless of whether you’re a sole trader or a large business looking to exchange foreign currency; below are a few unambiguous and elementary definitions that might with a little luck eradicate pretty much all of the mistiness and make the often misunderstood process of earning significant additional monetary income by trading foreign currency much more straightforward.

Starting at the start with the most painless of definitions an exchange rate is the current price at one specific country’s money could be converted to another’s. So that, for an example the rate would be the quantity of the China Yuan Renminbi you should acquire for every Saudi Riyal.

Fixed exchange rates are likewise recognised by the term ‘pegged exchange rates’; pegged exchange rates are used to stabilize the current value of a nations currency; particularly at times when that currency is fluctuating a great deal; this really helps to facilitate overseas business & investment.

Floating exchange rates – this is when a currencies current value is dictated with market forces. This is a much more risky way to conduct business but also this is the situation wherein you should enjoy the chance to earn a tidy profit, Do you want to exchange money, have look here.

You may also overhear talk of animals in exchange circles; a bull is a person that thinks market prices will go upwards and a bear is a person that believes market prices will drop. A bull market is a marketplace where prices are currently going up conversely a bear market is the opposite – a market where values are going downwards

A currency broker is an individual who acts as an intermediary person in-between yourself and the market place – currency brokers are actually many times in the position to get you the choicest price at moments when you are looking to acquire or conceivably sell.

The dollar rate is the value that one unit of any currency has when put against a single unit of the American Dollar; this is a very useful indicator for a national currencies current value.

This is very obviously by no means an extensive selection of terms – it is merely a good starting point; but with a tiny little bit more groundwork you can be markedly on your way to becoming a financial expert in no time.

E=MC – Is It In Me?

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

How many times have you seen the E = MC2 formula and
wondered what it might mean to you?

Old Einstein had a lot more up his sleeve than fancy
algebraic equations. This particular “thought experiment”
still inspires discoveries of various sorts throughout the
world today.

Let’s jump back to earlier days in Albert’s lab – a man
standing at the blackboard [chalkboard] is furiously pacing
up and down in his mind trying to find a symbolic
representation for the entity known as energy.

He stops, screams Eureka! and proceeds to write
those famous symbols, Energy is equal to Mass [M] multiplied
by the speed of light [C] to the second power. The world
hears of his breakthrough and begins throwing laurel wreaths
in his path, everywhere he goes he is hailed as a hero, and
the rest is history – or is it prologue?

In the social realm, we can easily recognize energy. We can
see it appearing, we can perceive it happening, we feel its
presence, we know it by what it does. We all are affected by
the work it performs in every area of our lives.

What can we do as leaders, managers and workers in a time
when change forces us to shift gears at the speed of light,
and alter the shape of our mass at a moment’s notice?

How are we supposed to generate, supply and sustain creative
energy under those crazy circumstances?

What Can Energy Do For Me?

You can use your energy to become a force or an influential
factor in your daily situations.

The energy of your knowledge, your mental attitude and of
your work patterns enable you to find solutions, create new
opportunities and inspire others.

In a word, your energy is what you use to convert, produce,
deliver, create, sustain, maintain, manage, inspire,
elevate, resolve, extend, facilitate, nurture, nourish,
starve, empower, insure or ensure, impact, affect, color,
portend, imagine, suppress, reverse, challenge, model,
interrogate, accept, impress, retard, propel, impede,
impose, rectify, amplify, shape, craft, electrify, energize,
synergize, or transcend things like information,
circumstances and possibilities.

Where Should You Focus or Apply your Energy?

There are many places you can direct your energies to, here
are a few of them:

=> the status quo – the existing state of affairs

=> the next growth opportunity

=> the future possibility

=> the problem or circumstance

=> the dream, scope or hope

=> the vision or imaged object

=> the human skill, talent, ability or potential

=> the revolution or evolution

=> the resource or thing

=> the decision or solution

=> the reformation or transformation

=> the restoration or sustainability

=> the inertia of the moment – the tendency for things to
remain as they are

What Ever Happened To “M” and “C”?

So what is Mass? It is your skills, experiences, talents,
competencies and education.

What is the speed of light squared – it is your development
as leader who either strongly or weakly desires to

=> “Push the envelope”,

=> Challenge the status quo,

=> Dance to the eternal song of the heavens,

=> Take the gamble against the fates,

=> Embrace life with open hearts and open arms,

=> Hope for the very best,

=> Look for the silver lining,

=> Dream the impossible dream,

=> Dare to stand on the shoulders of giants,

=> Seek first the Kingdom of God and His judgment of
righteousness!

————————————————————

There is darkness and there is light – whichever one you
choose to live inside you will determine the amount and
quality of the energy you show to the world.

Do you work with other people? Do you have to present your
ideas or explain your knowledge to others?

Would you like to experience the kinds of breakthroughs that
can help you energize your life, work and relationships?

97% of CEOs report they would like to see more energy in
their people, in fact many CEOs believe 26% of their
workplaces are really “asleep at the wheel”!

You can begin today to charge your batteries and crank up
the juice of your personal power generator.

“There is no limit to what you can imagine. And with
commitment, with effort, what you can imagine you can
become. Put your mind to work for you. Believe that you can
do it. The world will tell you that you can’t. Yet, in your
belief you’ll find the strength, you’ll find the ability, to
do it anyway.” Ralph Marston

If you follow Marston’s advice, you will be that energetic,
uplifting, inspirational leader people will always be drawn
to.

The Ten Commandments of Leadership

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

A poem hangs on the wall at Mother Theresa’s orphanage in India. For all who are called to lead, it is a great reminder of what we should do:

1. People are illogical, unreasonable and self-centered (including me). Love them anyway.

2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Do good anyway.

3. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.

4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.

6. The biggest people with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the littlest people with the littlest ideas. Think big anyway.

7. People favor underdogs, but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

8. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.

9. People really need help, but may attack you if you do help them. Help them anyway.

10. Give the world the best you have and you will get kicked in the teeth. Give the best you have anyway.

Awaken the Leader in You: 10 Easy Steps To Develop Your Leadership Skills

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

“The miracle power that elevates the few is to be found in their industry, application, and perseverance, under the promptings of a brave determined spirit.” – Mark Twain

Many motivational experts like to say that leaders are made, not born. I would argue the exact opposite. I believe we are all natural born leaders, but have been deprogrammed along the way. As children, we were natural leaders – curious and humble, always hungry and thirsty for knowledge, with an incredibly vivid imagination; we knew exactly what we wanted, were persistent and determined in getting what we wanted, and had the ability to motivate, inspire, and influence everyone around us to help us in accomplishing our mission. So why is this so difficult to do as adults? What happened?

As children, over time, we got used to hearing, No, Don’t, and Can’t. No! Don’t do this. Don’t do that. You can’t do this. You can’t do that. No! Many of our parents told us to keep quiet and not disturb the adults by asking silly questions. This pattern continued into high school with our teachers telling us what we could do and couldn’t do and what was possible. Then many of us got hit with the big one institutionalized formal education known as college or university. Unfortunately, the traditional educational system doesn’t teach students how to become leaders; it teaches students how to become polite order takers for the corporate world. Instead of learning to become creative, independent, self-reliant, and think for themselves, most people learn how to obey and intelligently follow rules to keep the corporate machine humming.

Developing the Leader in you to live your highest life, then, requires a process of unlearning by self-remembering and self-honoring. Being an effective leader again will require you to be brave and unlock the door to your inner attic, where your childhood dreams lie, going inside to the heart. Based on my over ten years research in the area of human development and leadership, here are ten easy steps you can take to awaken the Leader in you and rekindle your passion for greatness.

1. Humility. Leadership starts with humility. To be a highly successful leader, you must first humble yourself like a little child and be willing to serve others. Nobody wants to follow someone who is arrogant. Be humble as a child, always curious, always hungry and thirsty for knowledge. For what is excellence but knowledge plus knowledge plus knowledge – always wanting to better yourself, always improving, always growing.
When you are humble, you become genuinely interested in people because you want to learn from them. And because you want to learn and grow, you will be a far more effective listener, which is the #1 leadership communication tool. When people sense you are genuinely interested in them, and listening to them, they will naturally be interested in you and listen to what you have to say.

2. SWOT Yourself. SWOT is an acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Although it’s a strategic management tool taught at Stanford and Harvard Business Schools and used by large multinationals, it can just as effectively be used in your own professional development as a leader. This is a useful key to gain access to self-knowledge, self-remembering, and self-honoring. Start by listing all your Strengths including your accomplishments. Then write down all your Weaknesses and what needs to be improved. Make sure to include any doubts, anxieties, fears, and worries that you may have. These are the demons and dragons guarding the door to your inner attic. By bringing them to conscious awareness you can begin to slay them. Then proceed by listing all the Opportunities you see available to you for using your strengths. Finally, write down all the Threats or obstacles that are currently blocking you or that you think you will encounter along the way to achieving your dreams.

3. Follow Your Bliss. Regardless of how busy you are, always take time to do what you love doing. Being an alive and vital person vitalizes others. When you are pursuing your passions, people around you cannot help but feel impassioned by your presence. This will make you a charismatic leader. Whatever it is that you enjoy doing, be it writing, acting, painting, drawing, photography, sports, reading, dancing, networking, or working on entrepreneurial ventures, set aside time every week, ideally two or three hours a day, to pursue these activities. Believe me, you’ll find the time. If you were to video tape yourself for a day, you would be shocked to see how much time goes to waste!

4. Dream Big. If you want to be larger than life, you need a dream that’s larger than life. Small dreams won’t serve you or anyone else. It takes the same amount of time to dream small than it does to dream big. So be Big and be Bold! Write down your One Biggest Dream. The one that excites you the most. Remember, don’t be small and realistic; be bold and unrealistic! Go for the Gold, the Pulitzer, the Nobel, the Oscar, the highest you can possibly achieve in your field. After you ve written down your dream, list every single reason why you CAN achieve your dream instead of worrying about why you can’t.

5. Vision. Without a vision, we perish. If you can’t see yourself winning that award and feel the tears of triumph streaming down your face, it’s unlikely you will be able to lead yourself or others to victory. Visualize what it would be like accomplishing your dream. See it, smell it, taste it, hear it, feel it in your gut.

6. Perseverance. Victory belongs to those who want it the most and stay in it the longest. Now that you have a dream, make sure you take consistent action every day. I recommend doing at least 5 things every day that will move you closer to your dream.

7. Honor Your Word. Every time you break your word, you lose power. Successful leaders keep their word and their promises. You can accumulate all the toys and riches in the world, but you only have one reputation in life. Your word is gold. Honor it.

8. Get a Mentor. Find yourself a mentor. Preferably someone who has already achieved a high degree of success in your field. Don’t be afraid to ask. You’ve got nothing to lose. Mentors.ca is an excellent mentoring website and a great resource for finding local mentoring programs. They even have a free personal profile you can fill out in order to potentially find you a suitable mentor. In addition to mentors, take time to study autobiographies of great leaders that you admire. Learn everything you can from their lives and model some of their successful behaviors.

9. Be Yourself. Use your relationships with mentors and your research on great leaders as models or reference points to work from, but never copy or imitate them like a parrot. Everyone has vastly different leadership styles. History books are filled with leaders who are soft-spoken, introverted, and quiet, all the way to the other extreme of being out- spoken, extroverted, and loud, and everything in between. A quiet and simple Gandhi or a soft-spoken peanut farmer named Jimmy Carter, who became president of the United States and won a Nobel Peace Prize, have been just as effective world leaders as a loud and flamboyant Churchill, or the tough leadership style employed by The Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher.
I admire Hemingway as a writer. But if I copy Hemingway, I’d be a second or third rate Hemingway, at best, instead of a first rate Sharif. Be yourself, your best self, always competing against yourself and bettering yourself, and you will become a first rate YOU instead of a second rate somebody else.

10. Give. Finally, be a giver. Leaders are givers. By giving, you activate a universal law as sound as gravity life gives to the giver, and takes from the taker. The more you give, the more you get. If you want more love, respect, support, and compassion, give love, give respect, give support, and give compassion. Be a mentor to others. Give back to your community. As a leader, the only way to get what you want, is by helping enough people get what they want first. As Sir Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.”

Leadership – L.P.B It!

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

“Dissatisfaction and discouragement are not caused by the absence of things, but the absence of vision.”
- Anonymous

This article in for anyone who is currently unsure, unknowing, on-the-fence, and/or otherwise “searching” for the answer to whether or not he/she can be an effective leader.

The answer? Quite simply is: “Maybe” or “Maybe Not”!

No, we are not trying to be funny or in any way make light of the question.

The simple truth of the matter is this. Whether you think you can be an effective leader, OR you think you can’t be – You Are Right!

Just take a moment and think about the original question. “Can I be an effective leader?” We challenge you to ask this question again, but in a slightly different way.

Rather than asking, “Can I …?” – Instead ask: “WILL I be an effective leader?”

Asking the question this way, makes something very clear to the person asking the question. That “something” is that each of us has a choice to make as to what we want to be in any given moment. THE CHOICE IS OURS.

Vision in Leadership is very much about making choices. Leaders make choices everyday that affect many other people. Because of the responsibility and accountability that comes with leadership, a good leader makes choices based on strong principles and beliefs.

Choosing a specific path or vision for your team or your company, is done most effectively by following the L.P.B.-It method.

The title of this article is “L.P.B.-IT! – The Power of Vision”. L.P.B. stands for the following:

L-eave It

P-erceive It

B-elieve It

LEAVE IT! – When faced with an important decision, it is sometimes easy to focus in on all the reasons why we shouldn’t do something versus why we should, or why perhaps it won’t work versus why it will.

Leave It – makes the point that a strong leader routinely makes the choice to “leave” negative thinking behind. There are plenty of nay-sayers who accomplish little or nothing. YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO BE ONE OF THEM.

On a regular basis, step at least “1 inch” outside your comfort zone. That is where all the action is!

In fact, everything you have ever wanted and have thus far been unable to obtain, is more than likely located “outside” this comfort zone.
To be a successful leader, you must be “uncomfortably successful”. Make this choice now!

Perceive It! – A strong leader’s perception is truly a powerful tool. Effective leaders perceive things differently in most cases from others.

For instance, go anywhere in Smalltown, USA or Ruralville, America where Walmart, Costco, Home Depot or some other huge bulk outlet store has just come to town.

Local retailers in these little towns have nightmares about this scenario playing out in their own backyards. The thought of having to compete against Goliath is extremely frightening.

No one would argue the fact that these local retailers have a right to be concerned. But, if our L.P.B.-It method really works, shouldn’t we “leave” these negative thoughts aside? Answer: YES!

The truth of the matter is that no amount of fear is going to change the minds of large chain executives. They will either make the decision to open, or they won’t. If they do choose to expand to these markets, you should know that they are well aware of your fears. In fact, these executives are counting on this fear.

Instead of “perceiving” the bulk stores as the enemy. Why not “perceive” them as an opportunity? YOUR – Ace In The Hole!

Opportunity may come in many forms, but we must seize the moment and perceive the opportunity in order to avoid becoming the victim of circumstance.

Examples of potential opportunities from the above scenario:

- Traffic patterns may change so perhaps a relocation of your business may be great for future growth.

- Land values may rise in certain areas. Buying now and selling later may be a wise investment for an early retirement.

- Increased competition typically increases quality for the consumer. More choices make service and quality more important. Price is not always the deciding factor. Know what your customers’ value most and deliver.

- Identify a niche for positioning your current business, or open a new business that can take advantage of the increased traffic and that can compliment the incoming bulk store.

If you weren’t willing to compete, perhaps your expertise would be more highly valued as a manager or supervisor at the new bulk store. Potential for stock options, increased benefits, new challenges, etc.

The fact is we could go on and on about possible opportunities in virtually any given situation. It’s all based on a person’s perception of any given event.
Perceiving things positively by no means ensures success, but understand this; perceiving things negatively virtually guarantees failure.

Again, it’s a choice, make yours now!

Believe It! – You may have heard the term “Believing is Achieving”.
This is a very simple but powerful phrase that has been proven over and over again. If you think about it, nothing great has ever been achieved until someone has finally comes along with the belief that it should be – and WILL be achieved.

For instance, man first stepped foot on the moon because of a President who firmly believed that we could achieve what many considered impossible.
President Kennedy addressed our nation by saying words to the effect, “some look to the moon and ask why, I look to the moon and ask why not.”

Isn’t it fair to say that President Kennedy’s belief of what could be achieved was very different than the belief of most people? If you agree, you might also concede that it was his strong “belief” that inspired a nation to make the impossible – possible.

In his recent book “Leadership Secrets of Colin Powell” by Oren Harari, he states:

“Perpetual Optimism is a Force Multiplier. The ripple effect of a leader’s enthusiasm and optimism is awesome. So is the impact of cynicism and pessimism.”

The same point can be made for a leader’s strong belief. The power of one’s belief and ability to communicate his/her belief to influence others IS awesome.

In conclusion, the L.P.B.-It method is all about making the appropriate choices in order to carry out your vision for success. Vision = Choice Cubed, if you will!

CHOOSE to leave the self-doubt and “can’t-do” garbage behind you in order to allow new worlds and new beginnings in.

CHOOSE to see opportunity instead of catastrophe.

CHOOSE to believe in the impossible in order to experience all that IS possible.

The choice really is yours, make it wisely.

More on Game Theory – Frequency Probems Solved

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

The last article in this series was one that may have been a little hard to follow if you’re totally new to the concept of Game Theory or if you’re really not a math person, so I’ll try to simplify it here in order show how it can be used with out having to perform complex mathematics in your head before making decisions in poker. The casino game 1-2 blinds no limit Texas Hold ‘Em. You’re small blind with your nemesis in the big blind. He’s had your number all night. Table folds around and you have 5d-6d, you call for half price, and your opponent makes it 6 to play. You call, still not able to put him on a hand. Flop comes 4d-Qs-3d, an excellent flop for you. You’re on the straight flush draw. You’re odds of hitting here are about 50%. Any 7, 2 or diamond and you have a really strong hand. That’s 15 outs. You check-raise here.
