Building Teams and Teamwork

A tight knit team is a group of competent individuals who care deeply about each other and are fiercely committed to their mission. They are highly motivated to combining their energy and expertise to achieve the common objective. From our observation and studies on building teams, we have found three primary conditions that have to be met in order to attain higher levels of team performance and member satisfaction.

  • Resources and Commitment
  • Ownership and Heart
  • Learning

These three conditions are the heart and soul of teamwork but are not blueprints. Every team is unique, and the requirements and details of its teamwork have to be worked out separately. Let’s look closer at condition number two – Ownership and Heart.

CONDITION NO 2 – OWNERSHIP AND HEART

This condition necessary for teamwork to blossom requires that building teams occur from the “inside out.” In other words, people have to work hard at developing “team friendly” attitudes, values and beliefs. Teamwork functions best when people believe it from the heart and act or think with integrity and in a way that is aligned with basic team principles. Tightly knit teams are built on attitudes, mindset, and values as much as the policies and systems to support them. At its most basic level the key to unlocking the power of the teamwork “Genie” depends on the willingness of the team members to rub the lamp of responsibility. Stake holders in the team need a passion for personal management to “install” teamwork and to nurture it. The seeds of teamwork have to be planted, cared for, and developed by the members themselves. As we stated before, building teams doesn’t come from the outside in, it comes from the inside out.

There is no question that “outside” forces will impact the ease and speed with which teamwork takes hold. But those forces do not control the heart and will of the individuals. Each member is responsible for his/her actions to the group. There are so many people who just don’t get the idea of responsibility and yet these same people tell us that they can’t remember the last time that they had a serious teamwork experience. Some say that they have never felt the power, energy and enthusiasm that comes from a solid team experience.

All too often organization members are unaware of the level and quality of teamwork that is going on around them. They are too busy competing against each other to think about it much. In any social structure, if people are not willing to take responsibility, get involved or become interested in what is going on, they deserve what little luck gives them. Members forgo their right to complain about the level of morale and the quality of work life when they don’t assume responsibility, assist in building teams, and help to foster teamwork.

One of the key challenges today is to teach and empower people to be more proactive at building teams. The primary predators of teamwork are not outside of the teamit isn’t top management, it isn’t the union or the government, it isn’t the weather, or the stock holders. It is the mindset, paradigms, values and beliefs we form as members of a work group. We see a disturbingly large number of people in organizations who play the role of victim to these outside forces and lament about how unfortunate their work situation is, the low level of moral, and what everyone is doing to them.

Once team members form the perception that its problems are being caused by others or circumstances “out there,” they tend to over look the real problems. Many have a “teamwork” blind spot and don’t see the possibilities and potential that exists when we work as a team. They are too focused on the events beyond their control, don’t harness the available potential, and fail to create the culture that they want. A team cannot fulfill its potential and solve problems if issues and concerns are not identified and addressed. When building teams, members will continue to struggle by avoiding the work and thus the rewards that can be achieved through constructive openness. Teamwork can prosper if everyone is willing to give up some of their control needs, let go of the past baggage, break down the fences and silos that becomes what some people refer to as a seamless organization.

With a little more effort and practice, team members will begin to recognize and take control of what goes on within their teams. Team members can determine and control how resources will be managed effectively, how they treat each other, how well they will communicate with each other, whether or not they will speak up in team meeting, the amount of caring and sensitivity they will show to each other, whether they will support the leadership, and display a level of self management.

The level of teamwork, probably more than any other element of organization life, is controlled by the members of the team. Team members can choose to act in skillful and empowered ways or they can be passive and give away responsibility and let the external forces dictate the quality and level of teamwork that will exist.

Spencer Johnson really hit a nerve when he wrote Who Moved My Cheese? The book, a best seller still, is a wonderful allegory of the things that drive and motivate us. I personally loved the book, perhaps because I read it in one night. But, I was left wondering if the most important part of the cheese story was ever addressed profoundly enough. I am talking about the idea that it is not all about the cheese!

If the books we are buying are any indication of the change we are seeking, then our ideas for what drives and motivates people are in deed changing. A majority of the “success” books I see on the shelf are significantly different from those a year ago. From trying to become a “Rich Dad” to just being a good dad; from becoming a “One Minute Millionaire” to learning how to go from “Good to Great”. The bulldog mentality is giving way to the “Love Cat” lifestyle. The last ten books I purchased have the words accountability, trust, or integrity on the title.

Even books relating to business success in highly competitive markets have changed in focus from “becoming” successful to the “attributes” of successful people; foremost among them, by the way, is integrity. We are longing for more than the traditional learning about leadership or motivation. We are realizing that true leaders (at every level) share traits we would love to package into a mandatory training program for all our employees.

Unfortunately, our existing model for training people has become as segmented as the business strategies we use in our companies. Partly, because of the emphasis we place on identifying the cheese (the environmental and monetary drivers), not the things that drive us to chase after them. In spite of the valuable lessons behind principle-centered and integrity-based leadership, we keep overlooking the overwhelming influence of individual values upon the workplace.

What keeps us from speaking honestly about values is the misguided fear that, if we talk about values at work, we will cross the invisible line where business and personal life should separate. Yet, when you deeply examine what motivates people to do the right things (to support customers, to be accountable to their employers) you find the values that drive them. You find THEM. Businesses that can shift their focus from purely strategic planning, to values-driven mission and vision, build a stronger foundation for long-term success. That foundation also becomes a catalyst for leadership training programs.

Remember that employees are people, and people are ultimately driven by their core values and influenced by yours. You have to make a conscious effort to understand the values of your employees (understanding the values that drive them, you, and your organization; and establishing common ground for communicating and dealing with conflict).

Teach Them How To “Drive”

Building a leadership training program that addresses values will strengthen the core of your company and will help develop employees into leaders. The tough part is doing it. So instead of teaching people how to behave, why not teach them how to drive?

There are many analogies I use to illustrate how people learn and interact with each other. My favorite is something my business partner Troy Darling and I call the “Merge Point Method”, or Merge Point. If you have ever driven in a busy city like Miami, you know that driving brings out the best and worse in people. While I am the type of driver that courteously allows others to seamlessly merge into my lane, there are plenty of others who, for their own reasons, will cut me off or drive like maniacs to get ahead of me in traffic.

How we interact with others on the road (and elsewhere) is a direct expression of our values and how we negotiate the “merge points” of life; those places at the end of two merging lanes when both you and the adjacent motorist have to decide who will volunteer the right of way. Merge Points are where we decide how to act, based on our sense of civility and cooperation. At the Merge Point we integrate or disintegrate. And for many of us that means knowing how to make the right choices at the Merge Points of:

• Mission Based on Goals VS. Mission Based on Values
• Explained Integrity VS. Exemplified Integrity
• Responsibility Understood VS. Accountability Chosen
• Good Service From the Brain VS. Giving Serving From the Heart
• Expected Trust VS. Earned Trust

When you evaluate honestly the patterns of behavior and the supporting tactics and strategies that make relationships “stick”, you will notice a pattern of conscious choices at these Merge Points. These are the choices that keep marriages together, build life-long friendships, and enable organizations to work cohesively and safely. They are the same enablers that improve the quality of work, and life at work; the patterns that consistently increase productivity, efficiency, and customer care. Find them in individuals and you find genuine and wise people who lead with empathy and trust.

Take time to evaluate your current leadership training programs. Are they achieving the right results? Are they building leaders? Or are you getting stuck at the Merge Point?

Public speaking does not have to be difficult. Here are some tips to help you prepare for public speaking.

You don’t need to be perfect in succeeding in speaking in public.

You do not need to be too witty and brilliant to be successful when you speak in public. Public speaking is not all about that. It may look like it is, but in actuality, it is not. You can be the average guy you are.

What is important in speaking in public is that you give your listeners something that is worth their time. If people leave after your speech with something that is of value, they would think of you as a successful speaker. They would consider your speech as something that was worth their time.

Deliver your main points

You may want to put in as many facts and information as you can. But only emphasize three or four main points. You could even talk about one main point if you want.

You should remember that what your listeners want from you is that you give them two or three key main points that they can understand and would make a lot of difference to them. If you are able to structure the talks that you have, lots of complexity will be removed.

Inject some humor but still practice humility

While there are many other public speaking styles, humility and humor are some of the devices that you could use to make your speech livelier and entertaining to your listeners.

Just make sure that you are comfortable being humorous and that the humor is appropriate for the occasion. If you do not feel comfortable giving jokes, then you might as well not use jokes which might fall flat on your nose. Or if you are speaking before a crowd of Americans of Asian descent, do not tell jokes about Chinese food or Oriental customs.

Humility in public speaking means standing before the others and sharing with them your own mistakes, your human frailties, and weaknesses. If you show to other people that you are not afraid or ashamed admitting such things, you create a relaxed and intimate environment that will permit them to open up to you too.

Being humble in public also makes you more believable, more credible, and more respected, with your listeners relating to you easier. You are no longer the remote expert who is ahead of them, but is one of them.

The underestimation of all difficulties or challenges involved could mean higher costs and longer time periods to get the job done.

Credit Report Inaccuracies

Inaccuracies on credit reports cost consumers thousands of dollars every year. Approximately 80% of Americans have inaccuracies on their credit reports. What causes these inaccuracies? How do they affect your ability to purchase with credit or obtain a job? What can you do about these inaccurate items?

A recent study by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, for example, found that four out of every five credit reports contained errors, and one in four “contained errors serious enough to result in the denial of credit or denial of an employment application.”

Among the major credit report accuracy findings of the survey:

Twenty-nine percent (29%) of the credit reports contained serious errors – false delinquencies or accounts that did not belong to the consumer – that could result in the denial of credit;

Forty-one percent (41%) of the credit reports contained personal demographic identifying information that was misspelled, long-outdated, belonged to a stranger, or was otherwise incorrect;

Twenty percent (20%) of the credit reports were missing major credit, loan, mortgage, or other consumer accounts that demonstrate the creditworthiness of the consumer;

Twenty-six percent (26%) of the credit reports contained credit accounts that had been closed by the consumer but incorrectly remained listed as open;

Altogether, 70% of the credit reports contained either serious errors or other mistakes of some kind. Among the survey’s major access to credit report findings:

Of the consumers that did obtain their credit reports, at least 14% of them were forced to call back 3 or more times after receiving busy signals or had to write a letter in order to receive their report; and 12% of the consumers waited two weeks or longer to receive their report once they finished requesting it. It took more than a month for one California man to receive his report.

Overall, 15% of consumers who attempted to participate in the survey either made at least 3 phone calls and never got through or requested their reports but never received them.

According to a study by the Consumer Federation of America and the National Credit Reporting Association four percent of the cases showed that consumers had a margin of at least 100 points between the three credit bureau scores. The causes of these errors are many: typographical, merging of consumer information by creditors, similar names or residences of consumers, or incomplete information provided by lenders.
